Positions available at the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences and the School for Mathematical and Computer Sciences at Heriot–Watt University

Dear colleagues, please note the following announcement.

Dear Colleagues

I would like to advertise two positions available at the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences and the School for Mathematical and Computer Sciences at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh.

I am looking for a

– Research Associate/Postdoc in Modelling, Analysis, and Computation of Complex Heterogeneous Multiphase Systems, a EPSRC funded research project which provides the opportunity to collaborate with an industrial partner. Deadline: April 24, 2017.

– PhD Student in Modelling, Analysis, and Computation of Complex Heterogeneous Multiphase Systems. The successful candidate will be funded by a prestigious James
Watt scholarship. Deadline: February 4, 2017.

More details about these positions can be found in the attached pdf files.

I would be very grateful if you could distribute via email channels/to suitable candidates.

Thank you very much in advance and best wishes,

Beginning of the semester — pub session

A pub session on the occasion of the beginning of the semester will take place on Monday, 17th October at 18:00 in the lounge (-1st floor) in restaurant Amfora (http://www.amforarestaurant.cz/). All students, teachers and supporters of mathematical modelling are cordially invited. In particular, bachelor students and first year MSc students should exploit the opportunity to meet their prospective teachers in a non-academic environment!

We are looking forward to see you on Monday!

Events in 2016/2017

Dear colleagues,

please note the following events organised or partially organised by the members of the mathematical modelling group:

Winter semester 2016/2017 is ready to begin

Winter semester 2016/2017 is ready to begin:

  • A preliminary schedule for the winter semester 2016/2017 is available in SIS.
  • The meeting of all students of mathematical modelling (fixing the schedule for optional lectures, brief discussion on topics of bachelor/master thesis, overview of available scholarships/projects/stays abroad and so on) will take place on Monday, October 3, as a part of the Seminar on continuum mechanics. This means that we will meet on Monday, October 3 at 15:40 in the lecture hall K1. We kindly ask all students to participate in the meeting.

If you want to stay in touch with us, please subscribe to our weekly email digest/newsletter.

Analysis for instationary partial differential equations

Sebastian Schwarzacher announces a new lecture, please see below. Detailed lecture description can be found in the attached document.

Hello friends and colleagues,
I wish to announce the lecture on the analysis for instationary PDEs that I am going to give next semester in Karlin.

Please spread the news to people that may be interested.

Thank you very much and all the best,

Sebastian

PhD positions at Bielefeld University

Dear students,

we have just received an email concerning several PhD positions at Bielefeld University, starting October 1st, 2016. Please note that the deadline for applications is in seven days. If you are interested, please contact us (Josef Málek, malek@karlin.mff.cuni.cz).

Dear Miroslav
Dear Josef

I hope this email find you well. I am writing to you because I might have interesting news for young people in the Czech republic. In 7 days there we will need to close our application for very prestigious new PhD positions. So far, we have zero applicants the Czech republic which surprises me a bit. Could you forward the following link to very good young people or to other math professors?

https://irtg.math.uni-bielefeld.de/open_positions.php

That would be really great.

Thanks,
Moritz

ESSAM School on Mathematical Modelling, Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing

Date: 29/05/2016  – 03/06/2016
Place: Kácov, Czech Republic

The aim of the school is to promote the interconnection of mathematical modeling, analysis, and computational methods used in solving complex (real-world) problems. The lectures will be prepared with a broad multidisciplinary audience in mind, and at each school a broad scope, ranging from modeling to scientific computing, will be covered. Usually four main speakers deliver a series of three lectures. Ample time within the school is allocated for the promotion of informal scientific discussions among the participants.

Speakers and topics of the 2016 school are:

  • Peter Bastian (Universität Heidelberg, Germany), [Simulation of Multiphase Flows in Porous Media].
  • Jörg Liesen (Technische Universität Berlin, Germany), [Krylov subspaces. Classical mathematics, iterative methods, and surprisinglinks].
  • Jan Mandel (University of Colorado at Denver, USA), [Probability on spaces of functions, with applications to inverse problems and dataassimilation].
  • Richard Katz (University of Oxford, UK), [Two-phase fluid dynamics of partially molten rock: fundamentals and application to the Earth].

The school is organized under the auspices of the European Mathematical Society (EMS) and Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University in Prague (MFF UK), as an activity of the Nečas Center for Mathematical Modeling. Participants will have a possibility to present a short communication (maximally 10 minutes in the dependence on the number of
participants contributing to this kind of activity).

The deadline for registration and submission of abstracts is May 2, 2016.

Registration is now open at http://essam-masc.cuni.cz/ including the additional information about the venue, program and deadlines.
